Shigeki Matsuoka is the founder, designer and master craftsman at KOMA in Japan. Using traditional Japanese tools such as blades and planes, he creates outstanding cubic curves which could only be achieved by hand carving, and not only it has beautiful forms, it provides the best comfortability and an ever so smooth touch. Matsuoka’s theory is that when you probe into the level of comfort, portability, safety and strength of the furniture as a tool, the beauty of the design always comes to be. Since 2003, he has been making furniture based on the concept of "Making products that satisfy the beauty of one-of-a-kind piece", committing to making the ultimate furniture all by hands, with his team of 15 craftsman at a workshop in the suburb of Tokyo. He was selected as the youngest ever Contemporary Master Craftsman from Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare of Japan in honor of his techniques and attitudes, and earned 48 awards such as Red Dot, A’Design and DNA Paris for his distinctive designs.
